Andy received seven letters in three sports: three for football and two each for track and wrestling. Although he was a tough competitor in both track and wrestling, it was football that was truly his best sport. He started at center and inside linebacker for three years. In his junior year, Fenwick was 7-3, missing the Playoffs by mere percentage points. In 1978, the team went 8-2 and made the playoffs, losing in the State Semifinals to eventual state champion Newark Catholic. Andy led the defense in tackles as an inside linebacker in both his junior and senior years. And from his center position, he paved the way for a strong running attack, led by Rob Harkrader. He was co-captain his senior year.
Andy was selected first team All-MML, first team All-District, and first team All-Southwest Region in 1977 and 1978. He was First Team All-State in 1978. He received the Orland George Harkrader Award in 1978.
Upon graduation from Fenwick, Andy attended Miami University and played football until a severe knee injury ended his college career in his sophomore year. At that point he channeled his football passion into coaching and has been a valuable member of the Fenwick coaching staff for over twenty years. He received a BS in Accounting from Miami in 1983 and is a Certified Public Accountant, working for the Internal Revenue Service.
Andy is married to Karen (Clemens), Fenwick class of 1978. They have two children currently attending Fenwick, Beau and Annie, and a third child, Jake, will be a freshman next year. In addition to coaching at Fenwick, Andy has been a Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 20 and coached youth sports as needed for the past 15 years. He has also served as Fenwick Festival Committee member and worked on various Holy Family Parish activities. |
